Medicare 101

Think about the Health Insurance Coverage you have right now, before you have Medicare.

Ask yourself these 3 questions:

1. Does my Current Heath Insurance provide coverage for me if I need to go to the Hospital?

2. Does my Current Health Insurance provide Coverage for me if I need to visit the Doctors Office?

3. Does my Current Health Insurance provide Coverage for me if I need to fill prescriptions at a pharmacy, or mail order?

Most likely, you answered yes to these 3 questions. Your Current Health Insurance Coverage has Hospitalization coverage, Medical Coverage, and Prescription Drug Coverage. Those are the”Parts” to your Health Insurance. You may not realize this because your Health Insurance Company provides and “sells” this combined together as full coverage, or just Health Insurance.

Medicare Benefits work the same way. Medicare is split into Parts. 4 Parts to be exact. The individual Parts are known by Letters to identify them.

There are 4 Parts of Medicare:

Part A = Hospitalization and Skilled Nursing Coverage

Part B = Medical Coverage, Medical Testing, and Medical Treatments

Parts A and B together are known as ORIGINAL MEDICARE

Part C = Medicare Advantage (This is alternative to ORIGINAL MEDICARE that combines Parts A,B, and D)

Part D = Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage

When you receive your Medicare Health Insurance Card (Your Red, White, and Blue Card) it will show that you have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. It will also show your Medicare Claim Number (As of April 2018, All Medicare Cards will be replaced and the Social Security number will NOT be your claim number. You will have a specific number to you.). It will also show the Effective Dates of your Medicare Benefits, which are USUALLY the 1st day of your Birth Month. You will need this card to show that you are enrolled in Original Medicare. You will also need this card to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan.
